The one thing an MMORPG player dislikes the most is getting his/her account hacked. Gaming companies try their best to keep their players’ accounts safe but these “evil masterminds” still find their way to steal login information. Old School Runescape for example. There is a player supposedly wanted to return but his account got hacked. Here’s his full story:
Old School Runescape Account: Unfortunate Story by tooncow in Reddit
“My Grandmother found an old laptop from a few years back, and she asked me to wipe the computer of everything so she could get rid of it. I open up and log in, the laptop is fairly fast. I see the logo for Old School Runescape, and I didn’t even know you could still play that any more. I still remember the account details, so I log in and play.
About 30 minutes later, I log off the account, and start running the malware detector. There is a lot, which I’m surprised. I attempt to clean the laptop, then after about 2 hours, I finished it.
A few days ago, I received an email from Jagex about my successful password change. I looked and saw that it had been changed from somewhere in America, which made me think that there must of been something that copied down what I wrote, and that’s how they got my email and password.
I tried to get back into my email account, but the password on that had been changed too. I used my phone to get back into the email, as I linked my phone number with my gmail account, and I finally re-gained access. I changed my RS password, as well as a bunch of other passwords, and that was that.
I then downloaded OSRS on my computer, and when I attempted to login to my account, I saw a message saying ‘Your account has been disabled. Please check your message-centre for details’.
I thought that this hacker had been doing something on my account, and when I went to check why I was banned, it was for ‘Major Macroing’.
I had no clue what that was, so I googled it and found that it was using bots to have an unfair advantage in the game?
So, what I’m asking is, is there anything I can do to get my account unbanned, as apparently Jagex doesn’t even look at perma-ban appeals.”
Old School Runescape Accounts: No To Hackers!
People commented that his story is kind of fake. They were telling that if his story was so true, he wouldn’t come back and be so concerned about his account only after three years. That reply was simply unreasonable. Regardless of the time a player taking a break from a game like OSRS, his account should still be safe and be what it was as he left it. The issue is that his account was hacked and the permaban issued to his account wasn’t his doing. Benefit of the doubt, I say. We all know that it is hard to keep hackers away but instances like this is bad reputation for the game company and a sign of incompetency. I hope that tooncow gets his account back the way it was and OSRS can ensure their players that hacking will be prevented even more.
